Six-goal striker and £40m star banned for Newcastle United game after Premier League confirm post-match incident

Following the final whistle of Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ipswich forward Liam Delap

received his fifth booking of the year. In the meantime, during Newcastle’s 4-0 victory over Leicester City at St.

James’ Park, midfielder Joelinton received his fifth booking of the year.

Due to Premier League regulations, which stipulate that any player who receives five yellow cards in the first 19

league games must serve a one-match suspension, both players will now miss the match. Sandro Tonali and Fabian

Schar are both only one booking away from receiving a suspension, while Dan Burn has already completed one for

Newcastle.

With only Manchester United and Aston Villa remaining until the suspension threshold rises to 10 yellow cards and

32 games, Newcastle’s trip to Ipswich will be their 17th game of the season.

“It’s strange how things work, I was on the side with him saying Joey don’t get booked and he’s like ‘don’t worry, I

won’t’ then two minutes later he gets booked so you just couldn’t make it up,” Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe

stated in reference to Joelinton’s booking.

He’s the kind of guy we need in every away game, therefore I’m sad to see him go. At least he may play freely and

play his typical game because he is such a dedicated player.

Newcastle United midfielder Joelinton will miss their clash against Ipswich Town next weekend.

Delap, who has scored six times in 16 appearances for Ipswich so far this season, was booked as tempers flared after

the full-time whistle in a match where The Tractor Boys grabbed a stoppage-time winner. Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri

was shown a second yellow card while Delap was also booked in an incident Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna claimed

he ‘didn’t see’.

Delap will not play in Saturday’s match against Newcastle at Portman Road, however, since the Premier League has

validated his booking. Ali Al-Hamadi, who started for AFC Wimbledon in League Two the previous season, is the

only recognized striker available for Ipswich going into the game.

In addition to Joelinton’s ban, Newcastle also has a number of injury concerns, as Callum Wilson, Nick Pope, Emil

Krafth, and Jamaal Lascelles are all sidelined. Sven Botman is getting closer to rejoining the first team, but Saturday

is perhaps too soon for the 24-year-old.
