Cowboys seem to emerge as potential landing spot for ex-Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

The New England Patriots swiftly moved from Bill Belichick to Jerod Mayo, who would eventually succeed him. Mayo was unveiled less than a day after the team and its longtime head coach announced their mutual split.

As a result, we are somewhat aware of the Patriots’ future; but, the same cannot be said for Belichick. Despite turning 72 in April, he is anticipated to keep coaching and will probably attract some interest because he is regarded as the best head coach in NFL history.

The Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers were both mentioned as possible landing spots, but it appears a new challenger might have emerged on Sunday. Following their 48-32 wild card playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers, the Dallas Cowboys also might be looking at a coaching change to replace Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy, who arrived in 2020, did enjoy quite a bit of regular season success with the Cowboys. After going 6-10 in his first year at the job, Dallas went 12-5 and qualified for the playoffs in three straight years — including twice as NFC East champions.

However, they were quiet after the playoffs began. McCarthy’s team was eliminated from the tournament at the first possible moment in 2021, went out of business the following year in the divisional round, and is currently out of the competition once more. Their 16-point loss at home against the No. 2 seed seemed to be especially damaging to the team.

Jerry Jones, general manager and owner of the team, stated as much.

One of the biggest surprises I’ve experienced while participating in sports is this. I understand how frustrated everyone is to that extent,” Jones remarked following the match.

“This seems like the most painful [playoff loss] because we all had such great expectation, and we had hope for this team. I thought that we were aligned and in great shape, but it didn’t happen for us. And it’s as fresh on me as it is on anybody else, but I won’t get into addressing any of the aspects at any part, from coaching to the players.”

Although Jones did not address McCarthy’s future, the Cowboys’ current head coach may not be happy that Belichick is available. After all, the former Patriots coach has an unrivaled resume and a proven track record of lifting teams into the postseason, particularly ones with as much talent as Dallas.

All of this, meanwhile, is still purely theoretical as of right now. Belichick had not received an invitation to a coaching interview as of Monday morning.

But it would not be that shocking when the Cowboys finally reached out.
