Tua Tagovailoa‘s Future at Dolphins in Question after Playoff Flop

After the Miami Dolphins’ dismal wild-card defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is under a microscope.

He completed 20 of 39 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a below-average QBR of 15.8 in the 26-7 loss.

For the former first-round selection, who is about to enter the last year of his rookie contract, this wasn’t ideal.

About his future, Tagovailoa stated, “I don’t feel any pressure at all,” according to Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald.

“I really believe in myself. I am completely confident in my ability to contribute to our organization. We’re concentrating on tonight and what transpired, other from that.

“We’re going to mull this over and figure out how to improve it for the upcoming year.”

According to Spotrac, the 25-year-old is worth $50.4 million a year for a six-year contract, which places him fifth at his position.

Despite leading the league in passing yards during the regular season (4,624 in 17 games), Miami might be put off by his lack of success in the postseason. In four postseason seasons, he has not won any.

Danny Heifetz of The Ringer speculated that the Dolphins would follow the Rams’ 2021 move of Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford.

“The Rams gave Goff a contract extension in September 2019, a few months after they lost the Super Bowl. But traded him just one year later and immediately won the Super Bowl with Stafford,” Heifetz said.

“It is not difficult to envision a similar scenario unfolding where the Dolphins re-sign Tagovailoa, but run out of offensive answers at the end of the year.”

To be fair to Tagovailoa, Miami has other issues. In the regular season, it was 22nd in the league in points allowed (23.2).

Still, the Dolphins need him to step up in big games, or they might consider a shocking change.
