Rangers make move to sign David Jurasek, defender must leave in January transfer window after Manchester United deal.

According to A Bola, David Jurasek “must now go on loan” during the January transfer window after Rangers contacted Benfica about a potential signing of the defender.

The Portuguese newspaper revealed on January 14 (page 16) in print that the left-back, who only signed for the team for €14 million [£12 million]

in the summer, is open to a move this month when they sign Manchester United’s Alvaro Fernandez.

The 23-year-old has had difficulty making an impression on Roger Schmidt’s team and is being pursued by Marseille and Lens of Ligue 1, but the

Light Blues have gotten in touch to discuss the necessary steps to acquire Ibrox.

Left-back is proving to be the target of more attention this month than at striker so far this month, despite the latter looking like the clear priority

heading into the window. Marseille are in the race despite already defeating Rangers to Hellas Verona’s Josh Doig, but they are set to rival Philippe

Clement for another left-back as Renan Lodi is leaving France for Saudi Arabia. It is also said that other clubs have asked about Czech international Jurasek.

Whether Ridvan Yilmaz is leaving or not is still to be determined, with Verona thought to be close to bringing him in to replace Doig.

If the Turk goes it makes a replacement at Ibrox a pressing concern with only Borna Barisic and possibly Dujon Sterling to cover the position.

But unless Rangers can bring in significant money for Yilmaz there is certainly an argument to keep him in Glasgow for the rest of the campaign and address the position in the summer, while directing their attention to the attacking positions midseason.

It would be obviously frustrating if Marseille managed to beat the Gers to two targets at the same position in a single window, but if Doig is already headed to the Stade Velodrome, there will undoubtedly be more of an opportunity under Clement than at the latter.

Jurasek has made just 12 appearances for Benfica in all competitions so far this season, and it appears that Fernandez from Old Trafford has

already taken his place. Rangers will likely need to find a player who is available and won’t cost a lot, so this could be the perfect opportunity for the

team to make a move and give Jurasek the boost he needs to get back on track.
