A New Orleans Saints assistant is drawing interest from the Giants. An interview took place.

The Giants are interested in a New Orleans Saints assistant. There was an interview.

According to a rumor, Joel Thomas, the coach of the New Orleans Saints running backs, was interviewed by the New York Giants for the same post.

According to an NFL Network story on Saturday, the Giants were granted their request to talk with Thomas about the running backs coach position they have open with the Saints. The 49-year-old Thomas joined the Saints in 2015.

The interview was made possible by New Orleans while Dennis Allen, the front office, and general manager Mickey Loomis discuss potential coaching staff changes. This past season, Allen was candid about the run game’s shortcomings. The Saints had the second-worst average in the NFL with 3.6 yards per carry, finishing 21st in the NFL in running.

During his final news conference of the season, Allen stated, “I would say that I don’t think we ran the ball as effectively as we need to run the ball to be the type of offense we need to be.”

Thomas coached in the collegiate levels for Louisville, Purdue, Washington, Idaho, and Arkansas before coming to the Saints. At the New Orleans training camp in 2012, he also served as a coaching intern.

The Giants are searching for a new running backs coach after Jeff Nixon left to become the offensive coordinator at Syracuse.

According to a source, #Saints RB coach Joel Thomas is interviewing today for the position of RB coach with the #Giants. Not wishing to put a coach on the back burner, New Orleans granted permission for the interview.

Jeff Nixon, the former NYG RBs coach, moved to Syracuse.
