Texans’ C.J. Stroud becomes youngest QB in NFL history to win a playoff game in record-setting performance

C.J. Stroud of the Texans sets a record as the youngest quarterback in NFL history to win a playoff game.

One word best describes Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud’s debut season: historic. Stroud was selected second overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

During the regular season, in a 39-37 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 9, Stroud tied the rookie record for single-game passing touchdowns with five and established the NFL record for rookie passing yards with 470. In his NFL playoff debut, he had an equally impressive performance: he passed for 274 yards and three touchdowns on 16 of 21 passes (matching the NFL rookie single-game record) in a 45-14 victory over the fifth-seeded Cleveland Browns. He was replaced halfway through the fourth quarter.

With the victory, he overtakes former quarterback Michael Vick of the Atlanta Falcons, the first overall pick in the 2001 NFL Draft, to become the youngest starting quarterback in league history to win a playoff game.

Stroud is also only the fourth rookie passer selected in the first round to win a playoff game joining former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (2004 season), his postseason opponent on Saturday Joe Flacco back when he was a Baltimore Raven (2008), and former New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez (2009). As the 2023 draft’s second-round pick, Stroud made history by being the highest-drafted rookie to ever win a postseason game. That record used to belong to Sanchez, the fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
