‘We’ve got targets’ – Wayne Rooney reveals January transfer plans as struggling Plymouth boss aims for ‘boost’ in battle against relegation

Plymouth Argyle are fighting to avoid relegation in the Championship, and manager Wayne Rooney has revealed the club’s January recruitment ambitions.

Plymouth Argyle has struggled to find rhythm under Rooney this season, ranking 23rd in the Championship standings. The Manchester United legend’s team has failed to score, with only 19 goals in 20 games, the joint-lowest in the league. As result, it has been anticipated that Plymouth may aim to bring in more attacking alternatives during the winter transfer window, and Rooney has now confirmed the Pilgrims’ plans.

WHAT ROONEY SAID

When asked about the January transfer window, Rooney stated: “We know where we are at.” We have aims that we want to achieve, but it is not always simple in January. For me, the most important thing is to get the four [hurt] players back. That’s the most important thing for me.”

Later in the news conference, Rooney was asked on intentions for the January transfer window and who the Pilgrims have identified as targets. The Manchester United veteran responded: “If we can get a few of players in, that will also assist. We’re always looking. The game is both boxes, so if we can tighten up in the back and have players available or bring players in to score more goals, that will give everyone a boost.”

Rooney’s position at Plymouth may be in jeopardy if the team’s recent slump continues. The Pilgrims return to action on Saturday, December 21, against Middlesbrough.
