Chiefs vs. Dolphins: Why Tonight’s Playoff Game Is Exclusively on Peacock.

The Kansas City Chiefs vs. Miami Dolphins Wild Card game tonight will only air on Peacock outside of the Kansas City and Miami markets.

This is a first for an NFL playoff game to be streamed exclusively on a streaming service;

the decision was made in response to NBCUniversal‘s significant wager that the game could serve as a doorway to attract more Peacock subscribers.

Important Facts

  • With only 30 million users, NBCUniversal’s Peacock streaming service is still a minor competitor in the streaming competition. The company sees sports as a key to expanding Peacock.
  • The Wall Street Journal stated that in May, NBCUniversal announced a $110 million deal with the NFL to webcast one playoff game this season.
  • It wasn’t the only NFL wager NBCUniversal made this season; the company also aired the Bills-Chargers game on Peacock last month without airing a commercial during the fourth quarter. Tonight, the team intends to do the same, forgoing a sizeable portion of its ad revenue in the hopes of providing a top-notch sporting event that might entice Peacock subscribers.

OPPOSITE

NFL fans have taken to social media to voice their disapproval of the Peacock arrangement, as there hasn’t been much enthusiasm for it thus far.

Charles Omenihu, the defensive end with the Chiefs, also voiced his opinion on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying, “I won’t lie, we playing on Peacock ONLY is insane.” Later, he made a bid to purchase three-month Peacock subscriptions for ninety Chiefs supporters.

Politicians have also taken notice of the decision; Rep. Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.) referred to the arrangement as “bait-and-switch BS.”

Quote

“Look, I think people will talk about it anytime there’s a change,” NBC Sports president Rick Cordella responded to the New York Post regarding the outcry.

ESSENTIAL PREFACE

The game is being played while numerous sports leagues investigate novel partnerships with streaming services.

Rob Manfred, the commissioner of Major League Baseball, recently reaffirmed that the league believes streaming will play a significant role in the future of the game.

The following year, games began to be simulcast on Amazon Prime Video, and in 2022, Amazon became Thursday Night Football’s sole home.

THE BIG FIGURE

28.4 million The average number of people who watched each of the six NFL Wild Card games that were televised nationally on regular cable channels last year was that.

ANGENT

NBCUniversal may be able to profit from the ongoing frenzy around Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, the tight end for the Chiefs, and their public relationship.

Swift has attended five of the previous six games, but it is unknown if she will attend tonight’s game.

WHAT TO EXPECT

At 8 p.m. EST, the Chiefs and Dolphins game begins. In compliance with NFL regulations, local television in the Miami and Kansas City markets will continue to simulcast tonight’s playoff game.
