Liverpool Echo journalist shares Everton transfer stance on Jesse Lingard to Goodison Park deal.

Liverpool Echo journalist Chris Beesley has highlighted what Everton insiders have stated regarding talk of a prospective transfer for Jesse Lingard. Since departing fellow Premier League team West Ham at the end of the previous season, the former Manchester United player has been a free agent. The Toffees have previously mentioned Lingard as a target, most notably eighteen months ago as a potential stand-in for Richarlison.

After growing weary of looking for a new club, Lingard severed his relations with his former agents, according to a Saturday (January 13) Sky Sports News story. Nevertheless, Beesley of the Liverpool Echo stated on January 13 at 10:46 a.m. that the Merseyside team has no intention of signing the Englishman this month.

According to Beesley, there appears to be less interest on Merseyside for Jesse Lingard, a former Manchester United player, than there was for the Argentinian during the intense speculation surrounding his possible transfer to Goodison Park. “Earlier in this January transfer window, I compared Jesse Lingard to Juan Roman Riquelme in how he gets linked with a move to Everton,” Beesley said.Lingard, like the South American playmaker, seems destined to never wear the royal blue jersey, though.

According to recent sources, the 31-year-old has severed his relationship with his agent. However, Everton was actively seeking a transfer for Lingard in the summer of 2022 after they had just sold Richarlison, as they felt the player fulfilled multiple requirements as a proven.

“Both manager Sean Dyche and club insiders have batted off claims that Everton could be preparing a move for the free agent who failed to seal a switch to Saudi Arabia at the start of this season following an underwhelming spell at Nottingham Forest.”

Avoid

Bringing in a player with recent Premier League experience on a free transfer – albeit with what you would suspect are fairly sizable wages – sounds a no-brainer on the face of it when you factor in Everton’s need for new attacking players. However, Lingard has not done anything of note on a football field since the second half of the 2020-21 campaign when starring on loan at West Ham.

The former England international was among the greatest players in the Premier League over those roughly four months, contributing 13 goals and setting up another in just 16 games.

After a dismal campaign at Old Trafford, he failed at Nottingham Forest the previous season, declining the opportunity to sign a long-term contract in favor of a 12-month one. It is obvious why Everton will not actively pursue this move given Lingard’s history of dubious decisions, the most recent of which being his fruitless search for a team in Saudi Arabia.
