Jermaine Johnson Is Just Now Getting Started on His Jets Story
There is a directness about Jermaine Johnson when he speaks that reflects
the direct path he may take to a ball coming off a punter’s foot or out of a quarterback’s grasp.
Says, in essence, “That was pretty good, but it can be better.”
At the conclusion of the season, Johnson was questioned about his experience in his
second season with the Green & White.
“It wasn’t my standard,” he replied after pausing to clarify that it was okay.
“That’s the thing. “I just keep pushing even after I think I’ve reached my goal,” he remarked.
Thus, I’m not sure. I simply keep pushing myself to the maximum, and when it’s all over, I know that I did
everything within my power.”
Looking at Johnson’s career arc from college to the present day will help us understand
where he has come from and where he might be headed.
From a part-time player to Georgia’s defence in 2019-20, he switched to Florida State
and detonated with 11.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss in 12 games.
That helped him get selected by the Jets with the 6th overall pick in the ’22 draft.
Then it started all over again. With 14 games played, no starts, 312 defensive snaps,
and 2.5 sacks as a rookie in the Jets’ front-seven rotation, Johnson started
to learn the ropes of the NFL. JJ started all 17 games as a full-time starter
this past season, finishing second on the team only to defensive end
Bryce Huff with 747 D-snaps and 7.5 sacks.
Johnson was asked if, as the third of the Jets’ three first-round picks
in ’22—behind CB Sauce Gardner and WR Garrett Wilson, as well as
second-round RB Breece Hall—he felt a little undervalued given his kind of year-two surge.
