Crystal Palace keen on Sael Kumbedi, two other Lyon players
Crystal Palace are apparently looking to sign three players from crisis-hit Ligue 1 club Lyon next year, with 19-year-old full-back Sael Kumbedi the most recent target.
Crystal Palace has expressed interest in Sael Kumbedi, as reported by Graeme Bailey on TBR
Football. The Eagles are looking at many reinforcements, with the 19-year-old Lyon full-back
emerging as a possible candidate. However, the South London club will aim to sign two more players
from the crisis-hit Ligue 1 club, with Rayan Cherki and Ernest Nuamah the other two targets.
Who is Sael Kumbedi?
Sael Kumbedi is the latest highly-rated prospect to rise in prominence in his homeland. A native of Stains, the Frenchman spent his formative years in France, passing through the academies at three clubs and graduating from the youth division at Le Havre AC. However, he has become a household name since joining Lyon from Le Havre in August 2022.
The 19-year-old has filled Malo Gusto’s role at the crisis-hit Ligue 1 club, but he has yet to establish himself as an unquestionable first-choice starter for Les Gones. Kumbedi has appeared approximately 50 times for Lyon and contributed five assists.
Meanwhile, Kumbedi’s improvement has piqued the interest of numerous well-known European clubs. Prior to the January transfer window, the French full-back has surfaced as a Crystal Palace target. The Eagles are also interested in signing Lyon players Rayan Cherki and Ernest Nuamah..
London calling?
Crystal Palace’s interest in Sael Kumbedi is understandable. While Daniel Munoz has been superb thus far for the South London club, Oliver Glasner needs an alternative to the Colombian full-back. So, Kumbedi has emerged as a viable target for Crystal Palace.
While Kumbedi has struggled for playing time this season, his stock in the market remains elevated. So it will not be shocking if Crystal Palace launches an effort to sign the Frenchman and his Lyon teammates next month. Les Gones, currently in difficulty following provisional relegation from Ligue 1, must balance their budget by next month.
Crystal Palace will face tough competition from other high-profile clubs for Cherki. Kumbedi and Nuamah may be their only realistic goals, given Cherki’s stock’s rise with each passing week.
