Two fresh transfer links emerge as Aston Villa gear up for January window

According to sources, Aston Villa has expressed interest in Bologna attacker Santiago Castro before the January transfer market opens. Castro, 20, joined last year’s Serie A surprise package Bologna in January, having previously played for Velez Sarsfield in Argentina.

The young attacker has impressed this season in the Bologna first team; while they’ve only taken one point from five Champions League games so far and are set to be knocked out of Europe entirely next month, Bologna has remained competitive in Serie A, if not in the spectacular manner that drew attention last year.

Castro has scored five goals in 20 games this season, including against Cesc Fabregas’ Como, AS Roma, and Euroleague champions Atalanta (also in the Champions League). Castro has been playing alongside Villa winger and Bologna loanee Samuel Iling-Junior, who will return to Birmingham next summer.

Castro, who has also piqued the interest of Arsenal and Newcastle and is believed to command a cost in the region of £35 million, has helped Bologna fill the vacuum left by the departure of Joshua Zirkzee, who departed to join Manchester United after an impressive season last year.According to CaughtOffside, Villa is monitoring the situation.

Meanwhile, they are said to be interested in Benfica centre half Antonio Silva. Despite being only 21, the Portuguese defender has already earned 17 senior caps for his country, but he has failed to find regular playing time with his club this season. Benfica might let Silva depart in January with the intention of signing a permanent deal of more than £40 million next summer. Villa, Newcastle, and Atletico Madrid all been mentioned as prospective destinations.
