FIFA announces 2030 and 2034 World Cup hosts

FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced the host countries for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups in an extravagant ceremony in his home country of Switzerland.

FIFA plans to hold another tri-country World Cup in 2030, similar to the one held by the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026. FIFA, on the other hand, plans to hold the tournament on three different continents. Portugal and Spain will be the principal hosts in Europe, with Morocco in Africa and Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay providing additional matches. Despite competitive and logistical concerns about flying across continents, FIFA chose to proceed.

The 2034 World Cup was handed to Saudi Arabia, a highly contentious decision. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar had comparable challenges, including as human rights, infrastructure, labor conditions, and a general lack of soccer culture. Following the news, social media was ablaze with criticism, particularly the usual complaints about bribery and corruption inside FIFA.
