A fire broke out at Whitworth Medical Centre on Market Street early this morning (Monday, 12 August), causing significant damage and forcing the closure of the busy facility. The incident has disrupted medical services, with all appointments canceled until further notice.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze just before 8 a.m., with fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service quickly responding. Firefighters used breathing apparatus, hose reels, and a ventilation fan to extinguish the flames. At the time of publication, crews were still on-site managing the aftermath.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service provided details, saying, “At 7:58 a.m., three fire engines from Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue, along with one from Bacup, attended a commercial building fire on Market Street. Crews used four breathing apparatus, two hose reels, and a positive pressure ventilation fan to extinguish the fire.”

The fire has reportedly caused extensive damage to the medical centre, which serves as a vital healthcare hub for the local community.

“We won’t be open today and are unlikely to reopen tomorrow due to fire damage at the surgery. Anyone who has an appointment today and tomorrow, please do not attend. We will reschedule everyone as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.”

Local residents have expressed concerns about the impact of the closure on medical services, with many hoping for a swift recovery and resumption of operations at the centre.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
