Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has said they don’t know the full extent of Tommy Watson’s injury at the moment.

Sunderland’s winger is poised for scans after going off against Bristol City on Tuesday night.

Watson, 18, was taken off in the first-half as the Black Cats went on to draw 1-1 with the Robins at the Stadium of Light. Patrick Roberts scored a late equaliser.

Speaking afterwards, Le Bris said, as per a report by The Northern Echo“With Tommy, we don’t have a diagnosis, so we will have to wait. At the moment, he has a problem both with the ankle and the knee. But we don’t know how serious.

“We missed Tommy, because the wingers are important against this type of defence. It is one of our main strengths to pin (the defence) inside, we can create space or switch the play. And a quick winger, good 1-v-1, can break this kind of defence. We were unlucky with Tommy, and we might have to find a solution now.”

Sunderland injury latest

Watson has a bright future ahead of him at Sunderland and they will be praying that he isn’t out of action for too long.

The teenager was really starting to find his feet for the Black Cats and was looking impressive.

He has been on the books of the Black Cats for his whole career to date and has risen up through their academy ranks.

Watson was a regular for the North East outfit at various different youth levels before making his first-team debut in April 2023 in a Championship fixture against Huddersfield Town.

He was handed a new three-year deal by Sunderland last year running until 2026.

The Horden-born man scored his first league goals last week against Stoke City.

Watson has made 12 appearances for the Black Cats so far and has found the net twice.

What now?

Sunderland will be patiently waiting to learn the extent of his injury and will have their fingers crossed.

The Black Cats need him available as they eye promotion to the Premier League this term.

They are sat in 4th place in the table and are in the play-offs along with BurnleyBlackburn Rovers and Middlesbrough.

Le Bris’ men are two points off Sheffield United in 2nd place ahead of the Blades’ trip to Millwall on Wednesday night.

Sunderland face Swansea City on their travels this weekend.
