Alfie House Shares Russell Martin Sack Update at Southampton

After a terrible start to the Premier League season, Southampton manager Russell Martin is getting closer to leaving St. Mary’s; but, according to local journalist Alfie House, there has been no update on the Saints manager’s future.

At the best of times, Southampton has been hindered by Martin’s emphasis on playing a possession-based style by passing out from the back, particularly this season against Brentford, Liverpool, and Chelsea. Martin’s team is already eight points outside the relegation zone, and things are starting to look dire for them. If nothing changes, they may be forced to drop, which may only happen if a more realistic manager is hired to take the 38-year-old’s position.

House, however, stated on the ‘Total Saints’ podcast that despite Martin’s turbulent start to the season, there has been no indication of his possible departure. What he said:

The club is keeping their cards close to the vest on this, so I’ll just say that we didn’t hear anything today. I queried a few folks, and they informed me that it has been more or less calm.

“We might yet hear anything in the next day or two, but if not, you have to believe he will be leading Spurs.

“I just wonder what it’s going to take, what it’s going to take to make them think for all of those reasons why they don’t want to get rid of him which are still valid, how toxic can it get before they [Sport Republic] go ‘we have to do it’. It’s a tough one for him now.”

Martin has overseen the worst start of any team in the Premier League so far this season, with just one win – over Everton – and two draws from their opening fifteen games. The south coast club will have a points-per-game record of just one point per 3.8 games if they don’t win any of their next four games. This is less than Derby County’s undesirable record of just 11 points in a Premier League season when considered over the course of a season.

That record hasn’t been contested very frequently, and if he does have a bad weekend against Tottenham Hotspur, he may have to consider leaving with a better run of games against Fulham, West Ham United, and Crystal Palace.
