Southampton risk becoming the Premier League’s worst EVER team as Aston Villa defeat leaves Saints stuck at the bottom of the table
Southampton’s 12th loss of the season to Aston Villa was devastating.
Russell Martin’s possession-based strategy isn’t working.
Southampton could end up becoming the worst team in the history of the Premier League.
Of the 646 teams who have finished top-flight seasons since 1992, Derby has the fewest points. In 2007–08, the Rams only managed to score 11 points.
However, Saints, who have only won five of their 15 games thus far, require a significant overhaul to stay out of the spotlight.
Project Possession by Russell Martin is collapsing. When the Saints handed up additional opportunities with kamikaze passing in their own area, the supporters who weathered Storm Darragh to watch their club lose to Aston Villa again were frustrated.
The travelling crowd cheered as keeper Joe Lumley went long, and on minute 24, Jhon Duran scored when the ball returned.
Martin later appeared to criticise his own supporters, demonstrating the disarray within the ranks. Joe kicked after we were pressured before the goal, which elicited a shout, and we gave up within ten seconds. “Knowing why we do things is really important,” he remarked.
The evidence doesn’t support Martin, and those remarks weren’t well received. They didn’t have a shot on goal on Saturday and are now four points behind.
