Where Martin ranks amongst Premier League managers for points per game
His Southampton team is currently eight points from safety at the bottom of the Premier League standings with five points.
Their 1-0 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday marked their 12th loss in 15 Premier League outings. Wolves, the next poorest team, has lost three more games than Southampton.
Southampton has now tied a season-high 10 mistakes that resulted in goals for the opposition, despite having to deal with contentious VAR rulings.
After 15 games last season, the St. Mary’s team has achieved the same number of points as Sheffield United.
After fifteen minutes, the St. Mary’s team had equalled Sheffield United in points.
Their only victory to date came against Everton thanks to a late winner from Adam Armstrong before Beto’s equaliser was ruled out by VAR.
Paul Heckingbottom, who started the season as Blades manager, had been sacked at this stage. He lost 11 of 14 Premier League games.
Under Chris Wilder, Sheffield United eventually ended the season with just 16 points and finished rock bottom.
In his debut season on the South Coast, Martin scored 1.89 points per game, but his average has since fallen to 0.33.
Rankings with points per match are often only available to managers who have overseen 25 or more games.
In certain circumstances, Daniel Farke is the manager who performs the poorest. In his 49 Premier League appearances as Norwich City’s manager, he earned 0.53 points per contest.
The bottom five are completed by Rob Edwards (Luton, 0.68 PPM), Vincent Kompany (Burnley, 0.63 PPM), John Gorman (Swindon Town, 0.71 PPM), and Aidy Boothroyd (Watford, 0.74 PPM).
Before the season ended, all five of these managers were demoted or relieved of their positions.
All of the other managers above have managed more than 25 Premier League games, but Russell Martin has only handled 15. Martin hasn’t played 25 games yet, and the Saints organisation might decide not to give him another 10.
The former Scotland international is the joint-second-worst performer when the criteria are changed to look at managers who have played in the Premier League for ten or more games.
With 0.31 points per game, Terry Connor, who managed Wolves until the end of the 2011–12 campaign when they fired Mick McCarthy, is the poorest.
As manager of Wolves in the Premier League, Terry Connor was unable to win a single match. Wolves ended last in the league, and the current Grenada manager managed just four points from 13 games without winning a single one.
Jan Siewert, the former Huddersfield manager, is the other player with an average of 0.33 points per game. Martin and the German, who took over at the end of the season, have identical records.
On Sunday, Martin’s Southampton will play Tottenham. After consecutive losses, Ange Postecoglou’s team travels to St. Mary’s.
This game would not have been singled out as one that the Saints needed to win before the season began.
But points are a must from every game now if the club are to improve their position and give themselves a chance to achieve an unlikely escape.
