Shannon Sharpe takes Jameis Winston to task over going rogue on final TD.
Arthur Smith blasted New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen for running up the score in the closing minute of Sunday’s 48-17 loss in what
many will remember as his last moment as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
Although Jameis Winston, the quarterback, later acknowledged that the players chose to allow Jamaal Williams to punch it in for a 1-yard
touchdown rather than call an audible up by 24 on a victory formation close to the goal line, Allen accepted blame for the incident.
Many media analysts throughout the league offered their criticisms of Winston, but none were as harsh as the tirade former All-Pro tight end Shannon Sharpe delivered on an ESPN “First Take” program.
Sharpe remarked, “It gives the impression that Dennis Allen lost control of that locker room.” However, I will say this: today, I would cut Jameis
Winston. If he were a member of my team, no. That is the mindset of a loser. .. Allowing the defense to set up will allow you to run the ball. Don’t
drive off the ball after tricking them into believing it’s a winning formation. That is acting erratically. Dennis Allen will most likely have to step down since his players don’t respect him.
In explaining his actions, Winston alleges the decision was made to boost team morale and ensure Williams didn’t end the season without scoring a touchdown (he led the league with 17 rushing touchdowns last season.)
Sharpe was upset with Winston because of his obvious disregard for his head coach by overriding his play call, even if Winston didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with his conduct.
Sharpe went on, “To play winning football, there’s a mentality that you have to have.” “Jameis Winston thinks like a loser. That explains why their loss in Tampa. That is the reason Tom Brady arrived, led the same squad, and won the Super Bowl.
Winston completed 47 passes for 264 yards, two touchdowns, and three
