Dennis Allen explains controversial late touchdown against Falcons

Williams seemed to really draw the ire of Smith

Dennis Allen, the coach of the New Orleans Saints, expressed regret for a late touchdown his team scored in a 48-17 rout of the Atlanta Falcons.

With just over a minute remaining, the Saints, leading 41–17, sent the ball to running back Jamaal Williams for a touchdown

even though they were in the victory formation. Falcons coach Arthur Smith was incensed by the move and confronted Allen on

the field following the game.

After the game, Allen apologized to the Falcons for the move, and seemed to suggest that the players had made the move

themselves in order to get Williams his first score of the year.

Allen told reporters, “That’s not who we are, that’s not what we’re about.”

To put things in perspective, when playing for the Detroit Lions in 2022, Williams led the NFL in rushing touchdowns with 17. He didn’t have any coming.

It seemed obvious that the Saints would have one more chance to score a touchdown against him with just over a minute remaining in Sunday’s game.

Whatever the situation, Allen quickly apologized because he knows that many people will view the play as unsportsmanlike and unnecessary.
