Latest On Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy, DC Dan Quinn

Latest On Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy, DC Dan Quinn.

The Cowboys have already guaranteed a postseason position ahead of their regular season finale, but the division title is still up

for grabs. Major consequences on the sidelines could result from the team’s performance in the postseason and its ability to lock up the NFC’s No. 2 seed.

For the most part of his comparatively successful tenure in Dallas, head coach Mike McCarthy has faced an unclear future.

Over the previous two seasons, the former Super Bowl winner led the squad to successive 12-5 seasons (a mark that would be

repeated again with a win over the Commanders today). But the team’s lack of significant postseason runs has persisted.

In spite of that, recent reports (along with an offseason vote of confidence from owner Jerry Jones) have pointed to McCarthy

being safe for next year. A strong showing both today and in the first two rounds of the playoffs would certainly help his job

security, as noted by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Schefter does add, however, that personnel around the league and within the

Cowboys’ organization feel McCarthy’s future could be significantly tied to today’s result.

A win over the reeling Commanders would clinch the NFC East for the Cowboys, but a loss would open the door to the Eagles claiming the division title.

The latter scenario would see Dallas go on the road in the postseason, something which would be particularly signficant given

the drastic difference in performance the team has displayed compared to its home contests.

Dallas came up short in Washington during last year’s season finale, and McCarthy and Co. will be aiming to avoid a repeat of that situation.

One year remains on McCarthy’s contract, so an extension this offseason would come as little surprise. The Cowboys have

continued to post strong numbers on offense after the departure of OC Kellen Moore and McCarthy taking over play-calling

duties on that side of the ball. The team has also been effective in many defensive categories, owing in large part to the job done by third-year defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Like he has the previous two years, the latter has continued to be a target for head coaches this season.

In both instances, Quinn withdrew from consideration by the HC; however, it is unclear if this will occur anytime soon.According to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News, Quinn is thought to be “more receptive to the right offer” in the

next hiring cycle than she was in previous ones.

The 53-year-old last served as the Falcons’ head coach from 2015 to 20, a tenure that included a trip to the Super Bowl.

But during his time in Dallas, Quinn has restored his reputation as one of the best defensive minds in the league, and if he

accepts offers from other teams, he will undoubtedly be in high demand.

The Cowboys want to keep Quinn, according to Schefter, but it will be interesting to see whether they can do it

without losing McCarthy. In any case, Dallas’ coaching staff will have a lot on the line both now and in the near future.
