Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Could Be Fired After Playoffs: ESPN Insider

Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Could Be Fired After Playoffs: ESPN Insider.

Though it appears that head coach Mike McCarthy’s job security is in jeopardy, the Dallas Cowboys have a chance to win the NFC East on Sunday. Dallas, who has only won one playoffs game in the previous two years, is getting ready for its third playoff campaign under McCarthy.

According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, the Cowboys may not be committed to McCarthy for 2024. While the latest from Schefter doesn’t outright say he’s coaching for his job, Dallas may let McCarthy loose should he suffer a big loss in the playoffs.

On January 6, Schefter said, “People around the league, and even some within the Cowboys organization, continue to feel that coach Mike McCarthy will be measured by how Dallas’ final game goes.” McCarthy stands a great chance of retaining his position should the Cowboys perform well in the postseason. However, as has occurred in each of the previous two seasons, if they falter and finish the season with a humiliating loss, then some believe Dallas may undergo change.

Under McCarthy, the Cowboys have struggled, going 1-2 in the postseason. The San Francisco 49ers, who defeated Dallas 42-10 earlier in the season and will be the NFC’s top seed this year, were the opponent in both of their losses.

Cowboys DC Dan Quinn In-Line for HC Job

Whether McCarthy succeeds in the postseason or not, the Cowboys might be getting ready to let defensive coordinator Dan Quinn go. Quinn is having a great season once again and might be prepared to take over as head coach.

The former Atlanta Falcons head coach could also stay in Dallas. But Schefter hints that could be as a coordinator or a head coach.

However, it remains to be seen how long that will last and whether Dallas can convince him to return for a further season, which could influence whatever choices this team takes. Sources claim that Quinn is something the Cowboys do not want to lose, and it is unclear what measures Dallas would take to hold onto him, Schefter said.
Under Quinn, Dallas has developed into one of the NFL’s most potent defenses during the previous three years. Arguably, keeping him is more crucial than deciding on the head coaching position.

Dallas Playing for NFC East Against Commanders

The Cowboys’ visit to the Washington Commanders seemed certain on paper. Dallas defeated Washington 45–10 earlier in the season, and Washington is now 4–12 overall. But the Cowboys’ terrible season-ending performance at the conclusion of 2022 is comparable to this one.

Dallas needed to defeat Washington on the road in order to have a chance at winning the NFC East at the end of the previous season. They were defeated 26–6, well short of winning.

The Cowboys were able to get over their playoff hump by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the following game. But losing to an under performing division rival to end the year is brutal no matter how you cut it.

The game is considerably more important this year. In the event that Dallas triumphs, they will host a playoff game and might avoid the 49ers until the NFC Championship. If they lose, they will be in a considerably more dejected mood going into the postseason.
