BBC Sports “Nowhere near the level” – Norwich City told to take transfer action in January.
This post is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which features personal comments from FLW Fan Pundits on breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings, and more. Norwich City hope to finish in the play-offs again this season. Johannes Hoff Thorup’s side has had a mixed start to the new season, with several ups and downs since his summer appointment as manager. The January transfer window provides an opportunity for the club to potentially cut the distance on their top six chasing rivals. If money are available, signings might be critical in their quest for a spot in the Premier League.

Norwich urged to target key areas in January
When asked how many new players they expect the club to sign in January, FLW’s Norwich fan commentator Zeke Downes predicted up to three. He has identified the attack as one area that need attention, as well as defensive midfield. “In an ideal world, I think a striker and a winger would be lovely,” Downes told Football League scenario.
“Also, a defensive midfielder, but we have been crying out for this for a long time, ever since [Alexander] Tettey left.
“We’ve made do with [Kenny] McLean, but we’ve also seen what happens when he’s not playing. “He’s definitely missed, Jacob. Sorensen isn’t that man; he doesn’t appear to be on the same level as McLean. “But he’s not an out-and-out defensive midfielder, which is occasionally required, particularly when we’re preparing for a promotion drive or when we’re in the Premier League. “You do need that defensive midfielder, you can’t just be playing with three not-quite defensive midfielders because you’re going to get caught out.”
Signings at Norwich could be a big difference-maker
Norwich are relying heavily on Borja Sainz for goals, with the forward scoring 15 so far this season. Given Josh Sargent’s injury troubles, adding another forward to create stronger competition for the Americans may be a sensible use of their resources. Meanwhile, trying to make the club more defensively solid with a new midfielder would be wise, especially since McLean will turn 33 next month. It remains to be known how much money they will have to spend in January, but Norwich should keep an eye out for any signings that could help them in their promotion push.
