Saints, Jameis Winston agree to restructure contract

For the time being, the New Orleans Saints and quarterback Jameis Winston are keeping their word to one another.

According to ESPN, the team and Winston have decided to rework the player’s deal. For cap reasons, the two parties are working

together to complete the task.

Being a part of the Saints for the past several seasons has not been easy for Winston. The quarterback has played in six games this

year and has only thrown for 264 yards. Since moving to New Orleans, he has only had one season with more than 1,000 passing

yards. He had a strong five years as the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the organization in 2020.

Per this new agreement, Winston is getting another two years on his contract.

His pending free agency won’t be affected, however, per ESPN. Winston turns 30 on Saturday and is expected to still be a free

agent this offseason. He has taken pay cuts in the past to remain a member of the Saints, but time might just be running out

between the quarterback and the Cajun country football franchise.

Winston gained notoriety in 2013 when he guided Florida State to a national title. As a member of the Buccaneers, he was

selected to the Pro Bowl in 2015 and led the NFL in passing yards in 2019. After that season, Winston and Tampa Bay parted ways.

With an 8-8 record this season, the Saints and the Buccaneers are tied for first place in the NFC South.

With a victory in Week 18, New Orleans may still qualify for the NFC playoffs; but, the Buccaneers must also lose.
