Ruben Selles ready to lead Hull City this weekend as Reading boss says his goodbyes
Ruben Selles, who has agreed to take over at the MKM Stadium, is expected to be named the new head coach of Hull
City and could be in place before Blackburn Rovers’ weekend visit. Since Reading granted City official permission to
speak with Selles, things have moved swiftly. It is believed that Selles will receive a six-figure compensation for the
41-year-old, who has a contract at the SCL Stadium that expires in the summer of 2026. Selles became Acun Ilicali’s
top target to succeed Tim Walter, who was fired last Wednesday afternoon following a dreadful 2-0 home loss to
Sheffield Wednesday.
Given the challenging working environment at Reading, it is believed that the Spaniard spent Thursday morning at
the Bearwood training facility for the last time to gather his belongings and bid farewell to the players and staff with
whom he has developed such a close relationship over the past year or so.
Since taking over in the summer of 2023, Selles has had to deal with a number of off-field disasters that have
plagued the struggling League One team since their relegation from the Championship. For Selles and his staff, life at
the club has become challenging due to a flurry of transfer embargoes, fines, and point deductions.
Only months after overcoming a 10-point deficit at the bottom of the table and surviving with nine points remaining,
the Royals’ lopsided 3-0 victory over Cambridge United on Tuesday night was their 11th home victory in 12 games
and sent them into the top six of League One.
The club has scheduled a press conference for interim head coach Andy Dawson and Xavier Simons to speak before
Saturday’s home game against Rovers, which City needs to win because they have lost their last five games, are
winless in their last ten, and are currently third bottom in the Championship.
