Why Ollie Watkins went down the tunnel early as Unai Emery lifts lid on Mings and Torres dilemma

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery spoke to the media after his side’s first victory in six weeks

Unai Emery addressed the media following Aston Villa’s 3-1 victory over Brentford at Villa Park.

Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, and Matty Cash scored to put Villa ahead at halftime, but Mikel Damsgaard equalized in the second period. Here is everything Emery stated during his post-match press conference…
What did you think of that, Unai?

“We break the spell of the results we were experiencing. Of course, at home, we feel at ease with our supporters. This is our castle. We wish to transmit the supporters’ positive energy.

“I believe we did an excellent job in planning the match. We didn’t control the game for the first five or ten minutes, but we eventually did. They were allowing us to make changes and create opportunities. I believe that the match we played today and the three points we earned gave us renewed confidence.

“It’s not enough; we need to keep moving and focus on the match against Southampton. The most important thing is to regain balance and concentrate on the upcoming match.”

Did you enjoy the transitions from your perspective?

“The way they were playing, man to man in the high press, we were breaking it and attempting to connect with players forward. We wanted to make the most of the available space in back. We battled at times throughout our build-up, but we also had to adjust and stay calm when they were pushing hard.”

Was there a message for your players before to kickoff?

“Try to concentrate on each match and forget about the table, where we are now, how we were, and where we are going. Even on Saturday, we’ll just feel how we can regain our confidence and ease at home. I don’t want to discuss our goal until day 30 or 32.

“Previously, I spoke about how we needed to be strong to finish in the top four or five, but now I believe we need to be calm and attempt to regain the confidence we lost, as well as a positive mood. Today was an excellent match.”

What did you think of Morgan Rogers’ performance, and his haircut?

“They may do anything they want with those things, but on the field, I want the best. To begin, with their behavior and devotion to everything we are working on tactically, as well as the attitude required to play serious, compact, and disciplined. Then each one, with their qualities, tries to be a protagonist, not for his hair, but for his football!”

Tyrone Mings had a big night, and you must be quite proud.

“You’re wonderful, Tyrone Mings. He had previously participated in the Carabao Cup and Champions League, but this was his first Premier League encounter in a year and three months. Of course, we discussed it before the game in order to assist him and make him feel at ease with everyone supporting him while he played as if he had not been injured.

“I think he played terrific; he helped us defend our box and clear several vital balls. He was also in their box during set pieces, threatening them. I believe it is crucial that he regains his good form, as he did today. Of course, he will be quite fatigued tomorrow, but he will be accessible on Saturday.”

“Both centre-backs are extremely good, with Tyrone Mings being a little stronger and Pau Torres being good with the ball, but they can both do the same thing. They can play; last year, when they were both available, I tried to play with both players, more or less settling them tactically into the system we were attempting to build.

“Now, at the beginning they are playing one or the other but maybe as well I can try for the next matches in the next month something with both players in the starting XI.”

Ollie Watkins started walking down the tunnel early. Was there any injury involved?

“No, he’s exhausted. He was exhausted from playing in so many matches. Of course, we had Jhon Duran, who played fantastically for 30 minutes. I believe this is the way. They can play together again, but we must strive to maintain the same tactical structure.

“Offensively, they are players that we can use to threaten the opponent and try to get a combo attack with both players. Tactically, we must continue to build a robust structure, beginning with one or both.

“Today was wonderful because they both completed the necessary work for the team in 90 minutes and had scoring opportunities. Watkins got one goal, but he had chances, and when Jhon Duran came on for 30 minutes, he also had chances.”
