Matt Doherty misses out on Ireland squad for matches against Finland and England

Despite new worries over Séamus Coleman’s fitness, Matt Doherty has been left off of the Republic of Ireland team for their Nations League match against Finland and England later this month.

When Dara O’Shea started at right back, Irish manager Heimir Hallgrímsson decided to bench the 32-year-old Doherty for the October visits to Helsinki and Athens after the player received a lot of criticism for his performances against England and Greece in September.

But because of his most recent hamstring problem, Coleman might not be able to play in Hallgrímsson’s 23-man squad when they host Finland at the Aviva Stadium next Thursday, which comes before Lee Carsley’s last game as interim England manager at Wembley on November 17.

In addition to Ireland under-21s captain Andrew Moran and in-form Stoke City attacker Tom Cannon being called up, veteran defender Shane Duffy returns in place of Andrew Omobamidele, who has a patella issue.

On loan from Brighton to Stoke, Moran is having a fantastic season and could immediately establish himself in the starting lineup in a creative central role that was previously held by Troy Parrott and Finn Azaz.

Hallgrímsson remarked, “Andy is a young player with a good engine in him.” He can quickly get back into shape and is skilled at pressuring. He has performed admirably for Stoke.
