Birmingham City cut ties with Gary Gardner at the end of last season following their relegation from the Championship.
Birmingham City chose to split ways with the midfielder after his contract expired this summer. He officially became a free agent in late June and then considered his options.
Gardner, 32, joined the Midlands club on loan in 2018 before making the move permanent a year later. He went on to make 184 appearances in all competitions, 20 of which came last season, and scored 15 goals.
He was signed by fellow League One club Cambridge United in mid-July after leaving St Andrews. He now works for former Blues manager Gary Monk at the Abbey Stadium.

The U’s offered Gardner a two-year contract that ran until 2026, and he joined them with the hopes of playing regular football.
However, due to an injury, he has yet to play for Monk’s men in the league this season.
He is yet to make his debut and Cambridge United is not rushing him back in until the appropriate moment arises.
After joining, he told the official club website:
“It’s a fresh start for me, and I’m excited to get started.
“Working with the Manager again was an important experience for me because I know what he can get out of me and what he can accomplish for the team. After chatting with him, Ben, and Michael Morrison about the Club, it appears to be a very exciting time to join, and I am looking forward to playing my part in it.”
Meanwhile, Monk stated: “Gary is a signing with real pedigree, and I am delighted to welcome him to the Club.”
“He is a superb player who also adds character to the dressing room. He is an excellent addition to the group and will help us progress as a unit in the coming season and beyond. I’m looking forward to working with him again.”
Cambridge United have had a difficult start to the season and are currently in 22nd place in the table, hoping to avoid relegation to League Two. They are barely a point away from safety, and they think Gardner can help them survive once he is fit again.
The days before Birmingham City
Gardner spent his entire career at Aston Villa before joining Birmingham City.
During his time at Villa Park, he made 46 appearances and went on loan to Coventry City, Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, and Barnsley.
