On Saturday, Sunderland will take on Championship rivals Coventry City in an attempt to strengthen their drive for the Premier League.
As Coventry City gets ready to travel to Championship leaders Sunderland on Saturday, they could lose one of their key players.
Prior to their home game on Wednesday night against a Derby County team tied with them on points, the Sky Blues are now in the bottom half of the Championship table. However, following their thrilling 3-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon, Mark Robins’ team will enter the match somewhat on a high note. Midway through the first half, Boro midfielder Hayden Hackney was given a second yellow card, which improved their case. However, Coventry took full use of their numerical advantage at Riverside Stadium, where Brandon Thomas-Asante, Haji Wright, and Josh Eccles all scored goals.
After the game, Sky Blues manager Robins commended his team’s mentality on Teesside but said that he was worried that recent results didn’t reflect the efforts his players had been putting on in previous weeks. In an interview with the Coventry Telegraph, he said: “I’m happy because it’s been a while coming, but it’s always been there; the performances have been here, but the results haven’t followed the performances, which occasionally causes people to feel a little anxious. Regardless of the numbers being lowered early in the game, they did what they did today: we got off to a fantastic start. There was some tit for tat in there, and the game got tiny. As the referee was issuing yellow cards and they were attempting to send off one of our players by flinging themselves to the ground whenever possible, I was a little worried that the scores would be tied. However, I felt that we performed admirably when they had eleven.
When the Sky Blues host Derby on Wednesday, Robins will be hoping that his team can build on their victory against Boro. However, the manager has a serious worry because one of Saturday’s goal scorers will be walking a tightrope with a suspension for the match. Josh Eccles, a midfielder, was cautioned in games against Sheffield Wednesday, Norwich City, Swansea City, and Leeds United earlier in the season and has already been given four yellow cards this season. Therefore, if Eccles receives his fifth yellow card of the season when his team plays the Rams on Saturday afternoon, he will miss Coventry’s trip to Sunderland.
