Jamie McGrath wary Dundee ‘smelling blood’ as he urges Aberdeen to bounce back from Celtic thumping
Jamie McGrath wants to see how the Dons respond to their Premier Sports Cup loss, even though he knows Dundee will smell blood after Aberdeen’s crushing defeat in the semi-final.
However, the midfield player is committed to making sure that the loss to Celtic, who won 6-0 at Hampden, is only “a slap on the wrist.”
Jimmy Thelin, the team’s manager, has rallied his players at Cormack Park with the goal of overcoming their lone loss in 17 games under the Swede’s leadership and their first loss of the season.
According to the Daily Record, McGrath and his colleagues are keen to get back to their winning ways at Pittodrie, where they have won all of their home games this season.
Earlier in the season, they defeated Tony Docherty’s team at Dens Park, and a tenth league win would guarantee that they stay ahead of the champions.
“I think everyone watches every Aberdeen game, so we can’t let that affect us,” McGrath said. We are aware of the pressure to perform for Aberdeen.
“Hopefully, it won’t have a significant impact on us. Naturally, we are really sorry to lose in the way that we did, but we will learn a lot from the semi.
We have previously played Dundee, but no match in this league is simple. We’ve seen so far this season that any club can steal points from anybody. We must be vigilant from the start and finish a strong week of training because they will be arriving there, most likely smelling blood.”
Jamie McGrath and his team are maintaining their composure in spite of Aberdeen’s commanding lead at the top of the table. Their latest blunder against Celtic served as a reminder.
“Yeah, we’re not really looking at the league table or that,” McGrath admitted. We’re just focussing on one game at a time, and because Dundee is up next, we must certainly avoid letting last weekend get to us.
“On Tuesday, we returned and regrouped after a really terrible day. There is undoubtedly a lot to learn from today and apply to next week, but we will also have numerous sessions to discuss our mistakes and areas for improvement.”
Following their intense midweek victory against Rangers, Aberdeen appeared to struggle with fatigue at Hampden Park. However, McGrath dismissed the idea that this was an excuse for their performance.
“We’re trying to catch the likes of Celtic and Rangers so yeah, there’ll be blips in the road but hopefully now that’s us for a while.”
To demonstrate their gratitude for their team, most of the Red Army stayed at Hampden, and McGrath wants to give them back.
“We have to get back on our feet next Saturday and give the travelling supporters something to cheer about because they were singing with us at the end of the game,” the midfielder said. It was rather nice to see them standing there, singing all the way through, even though they could have easily turned against us.
