“At least £3m” – Rob Dickie and Jason Knight price-tags at Bristol City debated

After a rather rough start, Bristol City has gradually begun to develop under Liam Manning this season and is now regarded as one of the Championship’s most interesting sides.

Brimming with youthful, dynamic players, the Robins have begun to edge closer to the play-off spots and, if they continue at their current pace, have a remote possibility of finishing the season in the top six.

This season, players like Yu Hirakawa and Max Bird have only made the squad stronger; the midfield is one of its strongest areas.

But Ashton Gate is also home to some of the best defensive players in the league, and Bristol City does have individuals on their roster who could be useful.

Verdict made on Bristol City’s best players’ price-tags

Given that the squad is full of players with high ceilings in the game, certain players may fetch significant costs in the years to come, as Bristol City has already demonstrated recently.

In the summer, Tommy Conway was sold to Middlesbrough at an estimated £4.5 million, which they will be able to use to further bolster the team in January. Some members of that squad, though, will only be sold if a comparable price is reached.

Tom Sandy, their Bristol City fan pundit, has been asked by Football League World to name the two players he thinks are the best at the club right now and how much they would fetch if they were acquired by another team.

He told FLW: “Jason Knight, our captain, is one of Bristol City’s two greatest players right now, in my opinion. He is without a doubt our midfield’s top player. Because of his hard ethic and skill both on and off the ball, I believe he occasionally wins us games by himself. He’s amazing.

Because of how much we missed him during his absence over the past few weeks, I’m also going to mention Rob Dickie. As you can see, now that he is back in it, our defence appears to be much stronger. Since everyone is getting hurt, it’s clear that we’re currently having a full-back crisis.

However, they’ve been outstanding, in my opinion, and we won’t be trying to sell them.

“QPR valued Dickie at around £10 million a few seasons back. He obviously had a poor season, and QPR had a terrible season as well. We were able to get him for a meagre £1 million, and he has been outstanding ever since.

“Last season, he was our player of the year. However, at the age of 28, he is most likely a centre-back on par with the Championship. He’s not Premier League calibre, in my opinion, so getting a premium price for him will be challenging. However, I believe Dickie might fetch at least £3 million if Tommy Conway is leaving for another Championship team for £4.5 million and hasn’t demonstrated the same level of skill as Dickie—he is definitely younger.”

Tom went on: “However, if I were Bristol City and someone made an offer of £3 million for Dickie, I wouldn’t take it because we wouldn’t get a player as excellent as him for that amount of money. I don’t believe he’s worth more than that. He’s great, but I estimate it would cost us about £4 million to sell him.

“I believe that Knight, the 23-year-old club captain, wouldn’t settle for anything less than Conway.

“For Knight, I would estimate £4.5–£5 million. Naturally, we would likely sell him for cheaper if his contract had less time left on it. I wouldn’t sell him for that price, though, given his quality, youthful enthusiasm, and significance to the team as captain.

Knight is the future of Bristol City

Knight has been perhaps Bristol City’s finest player since joining from Derby County at the beginning of the 2023–24 season, and he received the captain’s armband in recognition of his achievements.

He has emerged as one of Manning’s most vital cogs, playing a slightly deeper role than the one he had at the beginning of his career after finding it difficult to get a spot at the Rams under Paul Warne.

Given that Knight has already made more than 60 appearances in red and white, there is good reason to think that he will be the cornerstone of Bristol City’s midfield going forward, and he is just getting better with time.

The Republic of Ireland international’s contract expires in 2027, and if the Robins start to pose a real threat for promotion, he will undoubtedly remain at Ashton Gate until then, giving him the opportunity to make southwest history.
