Raiders bring back ex-head coach amid staff changes

The Las Vegas Raiders made significant coaching staff changes following their Sunday loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, and they have now welcomed back a familiar face.

According to the NFL Network, Norv Turner has stepped out of retirement to join the Raiders. Turner’s son, Scott Turner, is presently the pass game coordinator in Las Vegas and may take over playcalling duties now that former offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has been fired.

Turner, 72, most recently served as offensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers under Ron Rivera in 2018 and 2019. He was appointed special assistant to the head coach after Rivera was fired during the 2019 season.

Turner was the Raiders’ head coach for two seasons, 2004 and 2005. He finished with a record of 9–23. He previously coached the Chargers from 2007 to 2012 and has served as an offensive assistant on various other teams.

Turner’s career took off when he won two Super Bowls as the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator in the 1990s. He has long been one of football’s most regarded offensive brains, and the Raiders are hoping he can help them fix some of their problems in the second half of the season.
