Leeds United welcomed the latest two talented teenagers onto the pitch on Saturday as Sam Chambers and Charlie Crew made their Elland Road debuts v Plymouth Argyle.
Leeds are up to second in the Championship this week after seeing off relegation threatened Plymouth Argyle with a resoundingly dominant 3-0 win.
The second half for Daniel Farke was something of a coast, as his team went through the motions to see out victory without giving up a single shot at Illan Meslier’s goal.
It was obvious from the moment Leeds took the lead through Dan James that there was going to be virtually no resistance from the away side.
Therefore, in the second half, Farke saw fit to ensure his side preserved energy for the busy week ahead with a trip to Millwall on Wednesday and a home clash with QPR on Saturday.
Subs in the second half allowed two academy graduates to make their senior debuts, first Sam Chambers coming on as a right-winger, before Charlie Crew entered the field in the 85th minute.
Charlie Crew shot on target means he’s halfway to matching Glen Kamara
Both Chambers and Crew showcased their readiness to come into the senior side during pre-season, and in the brief stint they were both on the pitch, they demonstrated quality.
Crew only managed seven touches of the ball, per WhoScored.com, but in the process, stung the gloves of Dan Grimshaw with a curling effort from outside the box.
Josuha Guilavogui coming on and looking more than capable of playing a part this season does hamper Crew’s chances of breaking through full-time this season.
With Max Wöber back in the squad and Chambers to compete with for minutes too, it leaves Crew in a difficult spot despite this debut.
He’ll be hoping for more and more exposure as the season goes on, but you have to wonder if a loan to League One might be the best thing for him, in order for his development to kick on.
