Beto VAR delay explained before major rule change that will impact Everton

Former Premier League referee Dermott Gallagher has been explaining the process behind the lengthy decision to disallow Beto’s equaliser for Everton at Southampton

Dermott Gallagher has explained why it took so long for Beto’s Everton equaliser to be ruled out in the 1-0 defeat at Southampton on Saturday and insisted that the process will be improving soon. The Blues substitute latched onto a ball over the top from James Tarkowski to beat Saints keeper Aaron Ramsdale and in real time, the assistant referee did not put his flag up.

However, VAR disallowed the score for offside following a long check from Matt Donohue back at Stockley Park. The Premier League referee from 1992 to 2007 Gallagher remarked in an interview with Sky Sports News’ Ref Watch show.

I initially believed he might be onside, but after looking at it, I can see that he is simply offside. That’s why the VAR’s technology is so accurate.

It will be resolved much more quickly when the semi-automated system is implemented, but VAR is very complicated. Furthermore, it was only Donohue’s second game officiating, and I believe he wants to make sure everything is in order.

He took his time because it was quite tight. However, you would prefer to take your time and make the best choice.

“That’s as true as it is right now. It will become semi-automated.

“The procedure is significantly smoother because to the cameras and the technologies they use. They want to have everything perfect before releasing it, so they’re not quite there yet.

“We had anticipated that it would be ready for the fall break, but it has now been slightly delayed. We all know that we want things to be 100% perfect if we want it to be released.

However, we see it in the Champions League, and it will be better and slicker. It will be superior.
