Celtic are back in Champions League play next week.
Football Insider reports that Celtic left-back Alexandro Bernabei is ‘expected’ to move during the January transfer window. According to the source, the Hoops have ‘no interest’ in keeping him this winter and will sign a new defender.
Bernabei, who is 24-years-old, is currently on loan at Internacional in Brazil. However, he is due to return to Celtic Park when his deal expires at the end of the year.
Celtic have a significant decision to make about what to do with him next. His contract expires in June 2027, although he has dropped down the pecking order at the Scottish Premiership champions.
The Hoops signed the full-back in June 2022 to improve their defensive ranks. He has subsequently made 28 appearances in all competitions, nine of which came last season, and has scored one goal.
Prior to moving to Scotland, he progressed through Lanus’ academy system. He was a regular for them at various youth levels before making 88 first-team appearances and scoring five goals.
His time at Celtic hasn’t gone as planned, therefore he was given the green light to join Internacional back in South America to get some playing time. He has since played 17 games and scored twice.
After joining his parent club a few years ago, the former Argentina youth international stated: “I’m very happy to be here, and I’m grateful to the club for giving me this opportunity.” I am proud to be playing in Europe because it was one of my dreams, and I’m delighted to train and play with my new teammates.
“The stadium is really magnificent. The people, club, teammates, and coaching staff are all fantastic. I’m incredibly excited and happy, and I can’t wait to participate in Champions League. I’ve heard that the people are insane, and I can’t wait to experience that sensation and intensity at Celtic Park.”
Ange Postecoglou signed Bernabei for Celtic. The player was delighted to work under the Australian, saying: “I met with the manager, and he said he believed in me and my abilities, and that I could rapidly adapt to the team.
“This is my first visit to Scotland and Glasgow, and I’ve seen photos of the city online, and it seems stunning, so I’m looking forward to learning more about it. The goal is to become champion, and we want to accomplish great things as a club, and I hope to achieve all of our goals this year.”
Bernabei became the first Argentine player to play for the Hoops. However, his future is uncertain, and the club may decide to cut their losses on him.
