Kyle Walker’s return to Sheffield United has been a topic of speculation for the last three or four years, and it has surfaced again.
According to TalkSport, Manchester City are planning to offload Walker at the conclusion of the season, with the 34-year-old certain to attract hefty offers from both the Middle East and the United States.
Toward the end of his career, the right-back has expressed a desire to return to his boyhood club, Sheffield United. And, with United likely back in the Premier League next season, there may be no better moment than this summer for him to return to Bramall Lane after 15 years.
Walker told Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE podcast earlier this year, “I don’t want to drop too low [down the divisions], I think it gets harder – certain things you have the luxury of having at City, like facilities or nutrition – but I’d like to finish at Sheffield United.”
One may claim that Walker has accomplished everything a professional footballer can achieve, including six Premier League crowns, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and a Champions League winner’s medal. The only thing that remained was a trophy for England to go with his 93 caps. To go with his glory, he has accumulated generational wealth.
As a result, a transfer to the Blades appears plausible, but he will undoubtedly have to accept a significant wage cut. Would he really turn down enormous earnings in Saudi Arabia or America to complete his career at Sheffield United?
Kyle Walker’s Unfinished History With Sheffield United
Kyle Walker began his career with the Blades, spending 11 years in the academy between 1997 and 2008. He appeared for United in only two senior games, including an impressive performance in the 2008/09 Championship play-off final. Tottenham Hotspur were impressed by his performance and signed him before loaning him back to Sheffield United, where he made another 26 appearances.
Let’s just say that in a perfect world, the Blades get promoted during this season. This would increase the club’s budget for fees and wages, regardless of ownership.
United would also say farewell to a number of loans this summer, including current right-back Alfie Gilchrist, who would return to Chelsea. This would leave Femi Seriki as the lone option for right-back into the summer. While Seriki has looked fantastic this season, surely the football club would love to bring Walker in, not only to be the main starter and likely captain of the team, but also to mentor Seriki – a player with very similar physical characteristics to Walker, and who graduated from the renowned Shirecliffe academy.
