Leeds United cruised past Plymouth Argyle 3-0 at Elland Road on Saturday.
Three first-half goals from Dan James, Joel Piroe, and Brenden Aaronson gave Daniel Farke’s team a comfortable lead, allowing them to ease off the pedal in the second half.
The Whites have now ascended the Championship table to second place, three points behind league leaders Sunderland, extending their unbeaten streak to eight games.
Plymouth, meantime, is in the relegation zone, three points above the bottom of the table, with only 12 points from their first 13 games of the season, but Wayne Rooney blamed “luck” for the outcome.
In his post-match press conference, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post [2 November], he said: “Leeds are a fantastic team, difficult to play against. We’re working to improve.
“I believe there are elements of luck, particularly on two of the goals. “We needed to defend the box better than we did for the goals.”
Leeds United totally dominate the Plymouth Argyle victory.
Leeds’ triumph had nothing to do with luck. Even with the goals, players were in the right place at the right time to direct rebounds, which is something footballers learn from an early age.
To highlight the Whites’ dominance in the first half vs the second half, their number of shots dropped from 15 to eight, as did the number of major chances, which fell from two to zero.
Farke’s team had numerous opportunities to score, but with players plainly saving their legs after halftime, the only “luck” was that Rooney’s side only conceded three goals.
The Pilgrims are presently in a dismal position, with only one win in their previous six games, three points ahead of last-place Portsmouth, and Rooney appears to be making excuses for everything.
