Former Bradford City, Rotherham United and Nottingham Forest forward confirms retirement from playing at 38

Former Bradford City and Rotherham United forward Matt Derbyshire has confirmed his retirement from playing at the age of 38.

Derbsyhire, a well-travelled frontman, played in all four divisions of English football over the course of his 20-year career.
He was most recently on the books of Bradford, who dismissed the veteran marksman at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Derbyshire just returned to his former club, Blackburn Rovers, to take on a coaching position. He has now confirmed that his playing career is officially over.
In an Instagram post, he stated, “What a privilege in life to play this lovely game of football. I have never taken a single day for granted, waking up every day and having the opportunity to do this for a living for the past 22 years.”

Blackburn signed Derbyshire from non-league Great Harwood Town in 2003. He spent six years with Rovers before going on to play for Birmingham City, Nottingham Forest, and Rotherham.

Derbyshire spent significant chunks of his career abroad, including stints in Greece, Cyprus, Australia, and India.

He said: “It [his profession] has given me the opportunity to play for my hometown club, Blackburn Rovers, which I adored as a child and where I made my Premier League debut. I could and would not have chosen a finer club to begin my adventure, and I will be forever thankful to them.

“I have been extremely lucky to have experienced and played at all levels of English football, and I am immensely happy to have represented my country. Playing abroad provided me with opportunities to play in the Champions League and Europa League.

“Playing for Olympiacos in Greece, winning the double, and performing in front of their supporters was an unforgettable experience for me. I found a home in Cyprus while playing for Omonia Nicosia, which will always hold a special place in my heart and provide a home for me and my family. Captaining this club was an utter pleasure and privilege.

“Football has given me incredible life experiences, from playing at Great Harwood to playing on the opposite side of the world in Australia. I’ve enjoyed every second of it.

“I wish I could do it all over again but now it’s time for me to pass on my knowledge and help the next generation of young footballers.”
