The forgotten Stoke City tradition that ended in a pub crawl

Twenty years ago, Stoke City defeated Derby County 2-1 at home. These amazing pictures show Ade Akinbiyi celebrating his goal with over a hundred Elvis Presley impersonators.

It is unlikely that there will be quite the same show of fancy dress as there was in January 2004, when a group of Stoke and Elvis fans performed the King’s songs during a halftime karaoke competition to raise money for the Donna Louise Trust. Stoke will play Derby at the bet365 Stadium today at 12.30pm.

Every time the archive Sentinel stories mention the iconic quiffs and flares that appeared in the east stand, it was reported that Stoke had hosted an Elvis Day for the sixth consecutive season. The group had also reportedly gone into the city after the game for a pub crawl and additional entertainment.

A group of fans who usually dress up for a festive match decided to dress up like Elvis for a game against Gillingham in December 1998, starting the annual Elvis event. As the game ended 0-0, they received the loudest cheer of the day and were paraded around the field.

It continued until 2004, when the pals also dressed up as Elvis for England games, most notably at Euro 2004 in Portugal. However, it appears that Elvis has left the building, at least for the time being. Perhaps a comeback special is in order.
