Russell Martin, the manager of Southampton, has retaliated against Lesley Ugochukwu, a loan star, after the 20-year-old angrily deleted the team from his social media accounts.
During the summer transfer window, Ugochukwu came to the Saints on loan from Chelsea. In order to give Ugochukwu greater first-team playing time this season, the Blues agreed to send him to Southampton. Ugochukwu came from Rennes for almost £23.5 million last year.
However, he has struggled at St Mary’s, making just nine appearances overall across all competitions and starting just two Premier League games. After that, he did not play for Southampton in Friday night’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.
Ugochukwu was not pleased with Martin’s decision, and he did not provide an explanation. The midfielder purportedly protested his lack of playing time by deleting any references to Southampton from his Instagram account.
With keen eyes On Saturday morning, Saints supporters saw that Ugochukwu had removed any reference to his present team. All of his posts are either personal or feature the Frenchman wearing the blue shirt of his father club, and Chelsea is mentioned in his bio.
Ugochukwu will also miss Wednesday’s game against Chelsea, as he cannot play against his parent club. Martin has now insisted that the youngster knows full well why he was left out against Brighton.
“I think if it’s not Chelsea, he’s probably back in the squad. He wasn’t in the squad against Brighton and he knows the reason why,” the Southampton boss told the Daily Echo ahead of the visit of Chelsea.
“It doesn’t mean he won’t be in the team going ahead since every game is different. We will have to evaluate the scenario from game to game.
Enzo Maresca, the manager of Chelsea, has made hints that Ugochukwu would be called up in January. He is currently concentrating on his team’s journey to the South Coast in an attempt to catch up to leaders Liverpool.
Maresca responded, “I have no idea at the moment,” when questioned about Ugochukwu’s circumstances. “I don’t know anything about the transfer window or the loans. I believe we have seven Premier League games before January. There are too many games to be considering that.
“It will be a dreadful day for us if we are not prepared. The reason for this is that, based on their performance, they were winning against Liverpool, losing to City 1-0, and drawing with Brighton, but if you look at the results, they’re most likely at the bottom of the league.
Since I played for Southampton in the Championship the previous season, I am familiar with their style of play. It will undoubtedly be a very difficult game, and we must be prepared. They are very courageous, and it is very obvious what they want—they want to keep the ball, and we want the same.”
