Report: Cowboys interested in adding four-time Pro Bowl RB

Report: Cowboys interested in adding four-time Pro Bowl RB.

A four-time Pro Bowl running back would seem to be a fantastic addition to the Dallas Cowboys, whose rushing offense has fallen short of expectations this season.

The Cowboys are considering bringing in running back Dalvin Cook, who was cut by the New York Jets on Tuesday, according to Josina Anderson of CBS Sports.

According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said, “Those are questions you are always visiting with and so forth,” in reference to signing Cook on Wednesday. “It goes without saying that I hold the highest esteem for him; during Dalvin’s time in Minnesota, I battled him in multiple games. He is someone I greatly admire.”

Whether or not Cook, 28, has any gas left in the tank is the primary worry. In 15 games with New York, he did not play up to par, averaging a career-low 3.2 yards per carry with no touchdowns on the ground.

However, it wouldn’t be fair to pin all of the blame on him. Pro Football Focus recently rated the Jets’ offensive line as the worst in the league. Dallas, meanwhile, has the sixth-best O-line.

The Cowboys backfield needs a someone who can relieve Tony Pollard of some of his workload; they don’t need an explosive player. He has a career-high 235 carries through 16 games, sixth in the NFL, and it’s wearing him down. He has also had the lowest yards per carry of his career. With an ankle issue, backup running back Rico Dowdle, who has averaged 3.9 yards per rush in 15 games, is doubtful.

Cook may not be as good as he once was, but he’s still a valuable back who can provide depth. Dallas (11-5) ought to give him a rough time.

Maintaining Pollard’s durability is also essential for a successful postseason run. The Cowboys stand a good chance of snapping their 28-year title drought. Fan Duel now has them as the third-best Super Bowl odds .
