Leicester City decision earns Southampton an apology after mistake admitted
Russell Martin, the manager of Saints, has stated that his team was apologetic for a refereeing error during their 3-2 loss to Leicester City at St. Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton boss Russell Martin has revealed that he received an apology from the referees’ body over a decision in their defeat to Leicester City last weekend.
Jordan Ayew’s goal in the 98th minute sealed the three points as City overcame a two-goal deficit to win on a thrilling afternoon at St. Mary’s. But with the Saints leading 2-1, City may have been lucky not to give up a penalty, and it appears that referees’ organisation Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) agrees in retrospect.
Mads Hermansen eventually punched clear after Ayew stopped Southampton attacker Paul Onuachu from getting a clean run at the ball from a corner by holding onto his shirt. It appears that PGMOL feels that not awarding a spot-kick was a mistake, even though nothing was given at the time.
