Matchday Memories: On This Day 1996 -Big Ron Moves Up After Owls & Sky Blues Share Spoils

On Friday night, Sheffield Wednesday overcame a deficit to defeat Portsmouth 2-1, due to an incredible goal from Michael Smith.

At Fratton Park, Connor Ogilvie gave the home team the lead in the first half, leaving Wednesday with work to do if

they wanted to catch up on the south coast. However, following a few halftime adjustments, things began to go their
way, and Barry Bannan, Smith, and Josh Windass combined to put them back on level.
They fought valiantly to take the lead, but it was a true moment of brilliance that sealed the match when “Smudge”
crashed the ball into the top corner with an incredible first-time goal to make it 2-1. He then ran over to a crowded
away end to celebrate with the travelling fans. That objective and the other highlights are shown below, and the video
at the top of the page contains some of the manager’s opinions.

Both Röhl and Chris Powell were present to perform for the more than 2,000 people who had travelled, and there

were some incredible moments in the away end as they celebrated a significant win.
Smith was understandably delighted after getting the winner at his old club, and he spoke to us afterwards about his
season so far and how he’s learning under the new boss. You can check out some of what he had to say here:
