Chris Davies makes feelings clear on ‘what a waste of money’ chant after Birmingham City draw.
Birmingham City played out a 1-1 draw with Mansfield at Field Mill on Saturday afternoon
After Birmingham City departed the field against Mansfield to a chorus of “what a waste of money,” Chris Davies wanted the team to take the taunts as inspiration.
With a strong performance at Field Mill, Mansfield became just the third team this season to defeat Blues in League One. As the prizes were distributed, Willium Willumsson’s first goal was nullified by Lee Gregory’s free kick.
As they descended the tunnel at full time, the home crowd joyfully celebrated their victory and yelled at the Davies players, “what a waste of money.”
Rival fans’ references to their summertime expenditures have made such chants a recurring motif of the Blues’ season. The Blues broke the League One transfer record by spending more than £20 million for Jay Stansfield.
Davies stated, “We can accept that they will be doing that.” “That team is better than a team that nobody cares about.” We must analyze this game from our perspective. We lost the game to a team that has been playing well and is right up there, but we were the superior team.
This season, the Blues have frequently been slow starters, but they took control of the first half and scored within ten minutes. Before Mansfield equalized, Willumsson and Lyndon Dykes wasted golden chances for the Blues.
The way his wall split to let Gregory’s free-kick slip past Ryan Allsop angered Davies, who was also unhappy with his team’s lack of deadly instinct.
“I felt we were very comfortable at halftime,” Davies continued. We scored a terrific goal and controlled the first half. Our tendency to give up goals has spurred us to action; this time, we scored early and ceased being as dangerous in our pursuit of the second goal. At that point, you’re always walking a tightrope because they could reenter it.
“From our perspective, the goal we gave up—in which the ball went over the wall—was incredibly bad. After that, their tails were up, and despite a few opportunities, we didn’t have enough to win the game. We were unable to score the second goal, which is crucial to ending the game.
“They are still in the game at 1-0. We’re not conceited enough to believe that 1-0 is simple. We played some excellent football, and I was quite pleased with our performance in the first half.
We were looking for a moment without producing too much, so the second half was fine. We gave very little away aside from the bad goal we gave up, and we had a few crucial opportunities that we would often take advantage of.
“While it’s a valid point in the long run, when you’ve been playing at your best, drawing a game feels like a loss.”
