Although the Japanese international’s arrival seemed unexpected, he quickly established himself as a regular starter in Chris Davies’ squad, and Blues fans have been pleased with the 27-year-old’s performance thus far.
Iwata, a defensive midfielder, has scored three goals in seven League One games for Birmingham, the most recent of which was a spectacular goal in a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the middle of the week.
While Iwata’s arrival may have been unheralded, he’s had no trouble with adapting to English football, and it’s clear that he should be playing at a higher level than League One.

Mike Gibbs, one of our Birmingham City fan pundits, was asked to sum up Iwata’s performances so far this season in one word, and it’s obvious that he and the other St Andrew’s supporters are rather pleased.
“My one word to describe Iwata would be outstanding,” Mike stated in an interview with Football League World.
He was clearly named September’s player of the month based on his stats, having played seven games and scored three goals as a deep-lying midfielder. He immediately established a relationship with Paik.
Since Stansfield has been our best player, I believe that when he first arrived, it was a little bit beneath the radar. He has performed very superbly.
Tomoki Iwata looks like a serious coup for Birmingham City
Iwata, 27, struggled for regular football at Celtic last season, playing just 24 games across all competitions, with only 11 of those being starts. It’s safe to assume that not many Birmingham City fans would have known much about Iwata.
But Blues manager Davies would have heard excellent things about the Japanese international and believed he was worth signing. Davies worked with Spurs’ Ange Postecoglou, who brought Iwata to Celtic Park.
Given the quality of the player they have and the amount of money they spent in the summer, it is no small accomplishment to be named Birmingham City’s best player this season. With each game that goes by, it appears that bringing him to St Andrew’s is the right move.
According to Fotmob, Iwata ranks among the top 10% of League One players in his position in a number of metrics, including goals (3), aerial duels won (84.6%), successful passes (382), and pass accuracy (87.6%).
Iwata’s performance has contributed significantly to Birmingham’s strong start to the season, and if they get promoted to the Championship as anticipated, he will have no trouble adjusting to the second division of English football.
