Official SFA’s VAR report from Celtic’s draw with Aberdeen released

The Key Match Incident Review Panel has upheld all VAR interventions in last week’s heated 2-2 draw between Celtic and Aberdeen, including the contentious handball claim that arose in the last moments of the game.

In the 102nd minute, Alistair Johnston hit a powerful volley towards goal, but Aberdeen’s Duk blocked the chance in the game’s final action.

Celtic players immediately surrounded referee Nick Walsh, claiming Duk handled the ball and demanded a penalty. Following a review, VAR supported the on-field decision, and the game ended without a penalty.

Since the match, there has been no clear video footage of the ball striking Duk’s hand. The available views indicate that the ball made contact with his leg, while some arm movement prompted concerns among Celtic fans.

The review panel has officially affirmed Walsh’s call, adding that “the on-field decision was unanimously supported.” The panel emphasised that the Referee was in a credible position to make the decision, and that the Aberdeen defender did not move his arm to block the shot.”

The panel’s verdict stands as proper, even though the incident continues to provoke debate.

This is another encouraging development since Willie Collum took over as chief referee. We’re publishing these reports weekly rather than waiting for instances to accumulate.
