Aston Villa lodge bid for £54.2m forward in attempt to crush Mikel Arteta dream

Aston Villa tries to dash Mikel Arteta’s hopes by submitting a proposal for a £54.2 million forward.

Prior to the January transfer window, Aston Villa is said to have placed an early bid for an Arsenal target.

According to a Spanish rumor, Villa has made an offer to buy Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, but it falls short of the La Liga team’s asking price.

Torres has made 123 appearances for Barcelona so far, with 26 goals and 15 assists. He was acquired from Manchester City for €65 million (£54.2 million) including add-ons. In his 48 senior appearances for Spain, the 24-year-old has already scored an outstanding 21 goals.

Torres has spent the last three seasons playing frequently for Barcelona, but he has mostly served as an impact replacement rather than a starter. Being on the bench so frequently might be annoying because the attacker’s skill and clinical nature are obvious.

According to Fichajes,Villa has made an official proposal of €15 million (£12.4 million) to sign Torres because they are eager to deliver more consistent minutes. However, it is said that Barcelona won’t entertain a deal until the Villans reach the €25 million (£20.8 million) asking price.

Barça is not really under any rush to sell because Torres still has two and a half years left on his contract. Nevertheless, the player is not at the top of Hansi Flick’s priority list, and given Raphinha and Lamine Yamal’s outstanding play, his playing time is probably going to decrease even more.

According to TBR Football, Arsenal is closely monitoring Torres, thus Villa isn’t the only team interested in him. Torres and Mikel Arteta collaborated at Man City, and the Gunners’ head coach is reportedly considering a reunion at Emirates Stadium. Arteta’s dream would be dashed if Villa signed Torres.
