Plymouth Argyle: The incredible difference between their home and away results

The Pilgrims’ Championship travel woes continued on Wednesday night when they fell to Millwall 1-0.

Following consecutive road losses to Millwall and Cardiff City, Plymouth Argyle’s poor away performance this week

has unavoidably generated a lot of discussion.

A 1-0 loss to Millwall, who were one point behind them prior to kickoff, followed the humiliating 5-0 thrashing by

Cardiff, who were at the bottom of the Championship standings at the time but are now in 20th place. Despite

playing stronger defence in the latter game, the Pilgrims’ inability to generate clear-cut scoring opportunities was

worrisome and maintained a pattern observed during their season-long travels.

The Green Army will be hoping that Argyle’s return to Home Park action against Preston North End tomorrow will

be the spark their side need after the results against Cardiff and Millwall.

Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims have won three straight games at the Theatre of Greens this season, defeating Sunderland

(3-2), Luton Town (3-1) and Blackburn Rovers (2-1). They have also scored nine goals and given up six goals.

Particularly at the Championship level, that is a strong record.

However, Argyle has lost five of its last six away games, and their lone victory came in a 1-1 draw with Queens Park

Rangers, where they were mostly reduced to 10 men. The sole away goal is still Morgan Whittaker’s incredible goal at

Loftus Road, but they have let up 13.

When you look at the statistics for Argyle’s home and away results since they were promoted into the Championship

under Steven Schumacher in 2023 the difference is huge.

During Ian Foster’s brief tenure as head coach last season, they had a 13-win, 6-draw, and 9-loss record at home, five

of which were consecutive and all without a goal. Out of 28 games, it is 45 points. They have scored 50 goals

compared to 41 for the opposition.

A heads up: this is not for the weak of heart. Since being crowned League One champions, Argyle has only triumphed

three times, and those two victories came against Swansea City (1-0) and Middlesbrough (2-0) under Foster. The

other was a 1-0 triumph over Rotherham United at the close of the previous season, when Neil Dewsnip and Kevin

Nancekivell were interim managers.

In their 29 away Championship games, the Pilgrims have drawn eight of them and lost eighteen. They have not far

from an average of two goals per game, having scored 19 goals and given up 53.

Since the 2023–24 season began, Argyle has won 72.6% of their points at home and only 27.4% away from home.

They had an excellent 46.4 win percentage at the Theatre of Greens. The time on their journey is 10.3.

They have averaged 1.78 goals per game at home and 0.65 goals per game away from home. At home, it is 1.46 goals

conceded, and abroad, it is 1.83. These numbers highlight the sharp disparity over the course of the current season

and a quarter of Championship action, as well as the strain it is placing on
