Birmingham City facing spell without £1.5m new boy amid fresh injury blow

Birmingham City will be without Emil Hansson for ‘a few weeks’, Chris Davies has confirmed ahead of the clash with Mansfield Town.

Birmingham City will be glad to boast such a stacked squad as injuries haven’t been the kindest to manager Chris Davies in the early stages of the campaign.

Some key players have spent spells on the sidelines but the strength in depth at St. Andrew’s has meant the impact of said blows hasn’t been too telling. They remain top of the table with one loss in 11 games, dropping just five points all season.

The Blues were handed a fresh concern in the week though as summer signing Emil Hansson hobbled off in the win over Bolton Wanderers. The Swede cost a reported £1.5m and has been a regular starter since joining.

However, Davies has now confirmed Birmingham City are facing ‘a few weeks’ without the 26-year-old.

“With Emil it looks like he will be out for a few weeks,” he told Birmingham Live.

“He’s felt something there and it looks like he’ll be out, which is a blow because he’s been very good for us and played a lot of football. That’s how it is, there’s always someone else ready to come in and take their opportunity.

“We will just have to assess Emil day by day.

On the plus side though, Birmingham City have welcomed Luke Harris back to training while Lukas Jutkiewicz is set to follow suit, though both are still building up to returns.

Davies added it shouldn’t be ‘too long’ before Krystian Bielik and Lee Buchanan are back as the approach the end of their respective rehabilitation programmes.

Dealing with the blow

Hansson has started regularly on the left for Birmingham City but as touched on before, they have the personnel to deal with his absence.

The nearing return of Harris could be a boost as he could operate centrally while one of Willum Thor Willumsson and Keshi Anderson occupy the left.

It could also present an opportunity for Japanese starlet Ayumu Yokoywama. The 21-year-old is an exciting prospect who has mainly found action off the bench but Hansson’s injury may pave the way for him to come into Davies’ starting XI.

Continuing in fine form

After overcoming Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night, Birmingham City will be out to claim win number 10 this weekend. In-form League One new boys Mansfield Town await and will be looking to spring a surprise.

Field Mill is a tough place to go and Nigel Clough’s side have showed they can compete with some of the strongest sides this division has to offer.

The Blues are a different beast though and will be favourites to claim all three points.
