City star aiming for derby delight and ‘Roos recall

A-League Men Rd 1 - Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City FC

On Saturday night, Melbourne City winger Marco Tilio can strengthen his case for a Socceroos recall by having a

derby-defining moment.

Tilio, who scored the game’s lone goal in City’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle last weekend, is keen to take advantage of

any chances that present themselves against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park, both for the benefit of his team and

for his chances of being named.

After making an appearance on the bench during the AFC Asian Cup in January of this year, Tilio, who was a

member of the Socceroos’ 2022 World Cup roster, has not played for Australia.

“Playing consistently and well is the only way to earn a spot back in the Socceroos squad, which would be an honor,”

he stated.

“I was thrilled to establish my account so early in the season and score the goal against Newcastle.

For me, it was incredibly pleasant and nice. I’m hoping that throughout the season, I’ll have that small sense and be

able to continue scoring small goals like that.

He stated, “I just want to play consistently, perform exceptionally well, and position myself to either return to Scotland or go on loan elsewhere in Europe.”

Tilio urged his team to take the lead early because he anticipated a fierce derby atmosphere on Saturday.

According to him, “it doesn’t take much to get yourself up for a game like this.”

“It’s a massive game here in Melbourne, and we all highlight this on our calendar, especially with it being so early on

in the season.

“I’m sure that the first 20 minutes is especially going to be a fight out there to win field position.

“Hopefully we come out on top.”

Adding spice to the derby is that former City coach Patrick Kisnorbo is now in charge of the Victory.

“Under `PK’ they’re a very structured team, and very aggressive with how they implement their game plan,” Tilio

said.

“We have ideas of how he’ll want them to play. They’re a strong side with great players, so hopefully we can nullify

them.”
